A quick report today. With the beautiful weather we’ve got, get out there and go fishing.

Walleyes: We’re hearing all sorts of stories about big walleyes being caught in the Detroit River. Fish up to 9 and 10 pounds are being caught all along the river from the mouth to the steel mills near Gibraltar. A young man came into the shop this week after catching an 11 pound, 11-oz. walleye on a Finn-S soft baits. We didn’t get the color so you’ll have to experiment for yourself.

Perch: Perch are being caught now at the 400 Club and near Metro Beach. Put a minnow or two on a Reilly’s perch rig. Fish in 7-12’ of water and have some fun.

Northerns: Use Dardevles and spinners for northerns in shallow water and in the weeds. The word is Metro Beach is the hot spot for northern’s.

The forecast is for some nice ice fishing weather this weekend and we’re told the St. Clair Shores library access point is producing nice perch – in the evening – using standard live baits. You can fish in the marina or venture out onto the ice from the library but if you do start to wander, be careful.

If you have afternoons to fish, we’re told the hottest spot now is the DNR ramp near Crocker Road.

Most of the fishing reports this winter have had to do with how best to catch perch and other pan fish.

Have you tried spearing for northern pike through the ice?

The open season for pike through the ice is December 1-March 15. That means we are in the thick of it now. The legal length minimum is 24”.

In the video above, Bradley from Lakeside Fishing Shop shows us how to attract pike through the ice with both sucker minnows and decoys. And check out those spears!

Please leave a comment below and tell us how your fishing is going this week.

Mitch wrote that he “caught and released this nice pike on Mill Lake.” He said the fish was caught on a jig and minnow combo.

Way to go Mitch! And thanks for putting it back to get bigger and stronger for the next fight.
