We were having coffee today at Lakeside Fishing Shop on Jefferson and Ten Mile in St. Clair Shores. Several anglers came in to buy minnows and jigs. Some were headed to the docks at Lake St. Clair Park (formerly Metro Beach Metropark. Didn’t know the name had changed? Click here for details).

Perch are in close to shore and since there’s no ice to sit on the docks make it very easy to find fish without getting soaked. Photo below shows the docks area last year when there was ice.

Also, worried about lake levels? See this re-post from The Voice…The lack of ice covering Anchor Bay and Lake St. Clair this year has helped contribute to higher water levels than years past, according to experts…

Ice fishing at Metropolitan Beach is great. Going to Gino’s and fishing is crowded but fun. So for a chnge of pace, how about taking a trip up to Brandenburg Park in Chesterfield Township? Brandenburg Park is in New Baltimore and located on Jefferson Avenue just south of Rte. 29 and north of Salt River. In the summer there is a fee to use the park. The park provides great fishing for families on the nearly 500 foot pier that extends out into Anchor Bay. Boaters are well taken care of here in the summer too.

The pier at Brandenburg Park

But in the winter, Brandenburg Park appears under utilized. The gates are open and there is no fee in the winter. You can walk over to the pier, drill a hole and fish there (the pier is closed in the winter). Or you can walk out onto the Bay and set up your gear off shore. Either way, Brandenburg Park is an excellent destination for the ice fisherman.

Easy access for ice fishing and productive too!

This is the North Marina boat docks at Metro Beach. To get there, just drive into the park and bear left until you see the marina. You park, walk about 100 feet or so, drill a hole in the ice, sit down on the docks and drop a line. What could be better? If your fingers get cold, walk to the car. If your butt gets cold sit somewhere else on the dock. This is ice fishing!

Catch perch in 8 feet of water at the docks

We were out there two weeks ago and the best baits was a very small jig tipped with a wax worm. The water at the docks is roughly 8 feet deep. The perch were, and likely still are, close to shore. No jumbos but lots of action to be had by all.
