Maybe You Need a Guide?
We all know the fishing has been tough on the Detroit River this spring. Your editor finally had a chance to get out and fish last Sunday. We fish off Kean’s, next to the seawall at the whiskey plant, above Peche Island and down to the Joe. Nothing but frustration. Maybe I need a guide! Here’s a picture of the mess I fished:
Charter Captain Dan from Lakeside Fishing Shop, a sponsor of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, guided clients on a charter on the river yesterday. They put two walleyes in the boat. Dan fished all over the river finding clear water then dirty water. His advice? Pick up and move around until you find some cleaner water.

Here’s a report and a couple of photos from our friend and Tourism Initiative sponsor Charter Captain Kevin Backus, Mr. Muskie Charters:
Well, walleye season is finally under way. The season got off to a very slow and crazy start with some cold temps and high winds which made for very bad fishing conditions in the Detroit river…to say the least! You could not get out most days and the ones that you were able to fish the river was a mud puddle! We are starting to get some good numbers of fish lately as the weather is finally starting to stabilize, the temps are coming up ( water & air) and the river is cleaning up! There were some big fish being caught in April but few and far between. This past week we have been out a few times and had some good success. We were fishing at the mouth of the Detroit river one day and boated 8 walleye and a few bass. The other day we were fishing south of the Belle Isle bridge and boated 22 walleye with 16 keepers and some bass as well. All in all it is starting to be some good walleye fishing finally and it should only get better as the month of May progresses as the weather should continue to stabilize and warm up the water and the fisherman!! Stay vertical & keep tight lines!
