Joe’s Secret Perch Place
St. Clair Shores angler Joe Krystyniak has been fishing for perch on Lake St. Clair for over 35-years. We caught up with Joe in the shop today and he gave us a secret to share with you…
“Go fishing now! The lake got dirty this week because of the winds and the perch fishing is great,” Joe told us.

Perch are less than 1/4-mile offshore
Joe was fishing every day this past week on the lake. He lives on a canal close to the shop so it’s easy for him to get up and go. What’s his favorite perch destination?
“I go out about ¼-mile off shore of the 400 Club,” he said. “I fish in roughly 7-feet of water and, this is important, inside the spillway hump. I anchor there and sit nice and quiet and the big perch come rolling in. The fishing was great this week and the big ones aren’t even in yet.”
“Get up early,” Joe said. “I fish from sunrise to about 9:30 in the morning.” He catches perch from 8-10” – up to 20 fish in a 2-3 hour fish. He jigs a ¼-oz. sinker on a plain hook with a size 6 Forage Minnow right on the bottom. He prefers to use a single hook since that rig is easier to fish.
The weatherman says things are looking good this weekend. Take Joe’s advice and get out there and go fishing.
