With this post, we announce a new partnership with FLW Outdoors. This site has been given permission by FLW editors in Minnesota to re-post their web-based videos or articles related to angling tips and techniques. Of course you can always visit the FLW site yourself but we will monitor their site for informative articles and videos you can use to maximize your fishing success on Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and in the Clinton River watershed.

Here’s our first re-post from FLW Outdoors. While the ice is slow in forming in our neck of the woods, we’re sure it’s coming soon. Enjoy.

Lake St. Clair anglers are now into the summer dog days when the heat of the day effects fishing success. The lesson from the professionals: Get out in the early morning or later afternoon but stay out of the mid-day sun if you want to catch fish.

Reports of muskies being landed all over the lake but in particular the Belle River and Pike Creek areas are fishing very well. Fish are moving from shallow to deeper water in the heat so fish fast and deep.

From Captain Kevin Backus owner of Mr. Muskie Charters and a sponsor of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative: These hot summer days have a direct impact on the water temps and the fishing as well. The heat makes the muskies go into their summer feeding frenzies and they grow at a fast pace. It also makes them go on the move between the shallower and deeper depths of the lake. The fishing lately has been awesome and we are now into the peak of muskie fishing season. We have been boating double digits regularly as well as getting those monsters once and awhile!!! Now is the time for people to book trips while the peak of the season is still here and it should last through the middle to late September. Call Captain Kevin at 586-206-4172.

Smallmouth bass fishing is still reported to be good especially along the Mile Roads. Use Cruncher Baits with 1/8 to 1/4 –oz. jigs. But the bass below was hooked on a shiner minnow in 15′ of water.

The smallest of our group - still not a bad fish.

Captain Dan from Lakeside Fishing Shop, a sponsor of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, says he is getting mixed fishing reports coming from the GPYC, the 400 Club and Metro Beach. Perch, walleyes and some pike being caught in the early mornings and later in the afternoons in these locations. Here’s proof that some anglers are catching their dinner:

This weekend’s MOMC Joe LePage Classic was a great one. Did you hear? According to Captain Kevin Backus, a sponsor of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative and owner of Mr. Muskie Charters, three fish over 35-pounds were landed and one was 36-pounds! That’s pretty good for the Opening Day weekend. Of course the weather cooperated a little for about the first time this spring and a great time was had by all.

Captain Kevin reports the lake is in great shape now. For early season muskie, Kevin is suggesting smaller baits and start your day fishing in the shallower waters. For charter information call Kevin at 586-206-4172 or at Kevinbackus1@hotmail.com
