Bass Catch and Release Begins Saturday

April 23rd, 2010 editor No comments

Catch and release season for bass opens Saturday, April 24 on Lake St. Clair.  Please be sure to release your fish soon after a photo.  These fish are on, or soon will be on, their spawning nests.  It’s very uncool to abuse such wonderful sport fish when they are doing what comes naturally.

One of the benefits of being a fishing report editor is that once in a while you get to go fishing and write about it.  On Friday, Captain Dan took Bob Russell from St. Clair Shores, Richard from the shop, and me to the Detroit River for an afternoon of walleye fishing.  It started out great with Captain Dan hooking several walleyes.  He landed a smallmouth bass as well.  Richard and Bob each had several battles with walleyes but the fish got the better of them.  Your editor, however, landed the best fish of the day.  Here I am proudly displaying it.

We fished from the Boblo Boat dock down to the steel mill.  Most of the fish were caught in 34-38 feet of water.  All of us were jigging with 1/2-oz jigs and Fin-S rubber baits.  It seems the root beer color fished well.   The water was clear and weather party cloudy. We stayed on the river 3 1/2 hours until the winds blew us out.

Captain Dan has a new pontoon boat called Looney Tunes.  He has a charter service and can take up to 6 anglers in the boat at one time.  The price is $450 for up to 6 anglers and he stays out on the Detroit River for four hours per trip.  Call Dan at the shop (586.777.7003) to book a charter fishing trip on the Detroit River.

Anglers:  Please send photos and fish stories to this site!
